TOPIC: Non-financial compensation, retainment and recruitment tools


  • Compare the strategic intent of various total rewards programs in US and Canadian firms.
  • Compare the Canadian and US strategic HRM responses to changes in the external business environment.
  • Demonstrate respect and value for the diverse viewpoints and experiences in the classroom and global population.
  • Describe the difference between the US (e.g. Affirmative Action) and Canadian methods.
  • Compare HR legislation in Canada and the US and the differing effects on managing people.

  • Focusing Activity
    Exploring how the Canadian and American approaches to Healthcare changes regional approaches to Benefits.

    2.  Think of which of the theories and models for Strategic HRM would help us describe and understand these differences.
    3.  Around the room are big sticky notes for each Strategic HRM Theories and Models.  Visit each and add your thoughts to the sticky note on this issue.
    4.  Once 15 minutes are up, the instructor will go around and read out each of the big sticky notes to the class.
    Discussion and questions are highly encouraged throughout this activity.

    Employment opportunities and certifications in HR-related fields.
    1. Sort into 7 groups
    2. Each group will take one of 7 HR-related certifications from the list and research it (maximum 5 minutes)
    3. Each group will report back to the group what they learned about their assigned certification (2-3 minutes)

    Activity - Preparing for Next Week's In-Class Student BRIEF Presentations
    Students pair up (or work single) to chose and sign-up for one HR Stories to present next class on one jurisdiction from Canadian Occupational Health and Safety Legislation and Regulations - Federal, Provincial, Territorial, Municipal, and Reserve
    NOTE = WorkSafeBC is not available as an option to chose for this assignment
    - No more than two groups (max 4 students) per jurisdiction.
    - To prevent jurisdiction, groups and singles need to post to Moodle Forum
    - First come, first served.
    - No PowerPoint, just speaking notes to be posted in Moodle for Unit 10
  • Presentations should include the following:
    1.  Jurisdiction chosen
    2.  Name of the organization that covers Occupational Health & Safety in that province  (e.g. WorkSafeBC - which is NOT an option for this assignment)
    3.  Website for the organization
    4.  Steps an employee takes if they're injured at work
